Meet the Speakers

Dr Rahmat Bibi Bagus, MBChB, IBCLC Dr Rahmat is a mother to 4 children (ages 10, 14, 18, 21) who all breastfed for extended periods of time. She is a medical doctor with an interest in paediatric primary care (having trained at Red Cross Children’s Hospital) and lactation. She established her own private practice called Kids Medicare in 2007 in Parow, Cape Town, South Africa. She is also an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and extended her practice with “Breastfeeding Care” seeing challenging breastfeeding dyads. She volunteers with La Leche League South Africa, running breastfeeding support meetings and several WhatsApp groups for mothers. She serves as the Professional Liaison Leader for LLLSA, and serves on the Medical Advisory Team and Global Professional Leaders forum for LLL International. She co-teaches a 25-hour online breastfeeding education course for healthcare workers in South Africa. “As a doctor I was dismayed to find out how little I knew about breastfeeding until I joined LLLSA. It’s sadly a neglected area of medical training."

Sofia Moutzoures, B Sp And H Therapy, SACLC Sofia is a qualified Speech Therapist and Lactation Consultant based in Durban. After graduating from Stellenbosch University and working in private practice thereafter, she decided to further explore her passion of infant feeding and swallowing therapy. Now, within her own practice she aims to lead with Philotimo, a Greek way of life that she grew up with that urges us to work with love, integrity and honour. Sofia also aims to bring patience, quality care, creativity as well as her own knowledge and soft-natured approach to the table with each patient she meets with.

Dr Doreen Mazakpwe, IBCLC, MBChB, MSc. Human Nutrition Dr. Doreen is an international board certified lactation consultant, the first medical doctor in Uganda to receive this prestigious international credential. Doreen hails from Uganda, the pearl of Africa where she obtained her first degree in Bachelors of medicine and surgery, then went on to qualify as a clinical nutritionist after completing a Masters degree in Human Nutrition at the Uganda Christian University. In June 2023, she became accredited as an IBCLC. Her interest in breastfeeding and lactation support was unearthed and kindled when she had her first child in 2012 which came with a terrible experience with breastfeeding. Even with difficulties, she went on to exclusively breastfeed that child and subsequently 2 more children. The combined time of breastfeeding her three children is 6 years and 6 months years. She is the founder of Naturally Nourish, a company which seeks to empower mothers and their support persons to confidently nurture their children through provision of high quality maternal and child nutrition and support for the first one thousand days. She is also passionate about equipping health workers with clinical lactation management skills as part of maternity teams. To date, she has supported new and expectant mothers for over 1300 hours over the last 10 years, and has inspired, mentored and trained over 500 health workers. As a hospital lactation consultant, she has pioneered and contributed to significant changes in maternal and child care in keeping with the baby friendly hospital initiative. As a private practitioner, she is a trusted provider of high quality, compassionate breastfeeding support. She is a member of the International lactation consultants association (ILCA), Lactation consultants Association of Southern and Africa (LACSA). She currently gives oversight to the ATTA breast milk community team, volunteers as a committee member of the IBLCE Ethics and Disciplinary committee and was the chairperson of the IBLCE advancement committee. She is also involved in the BRANCH WHO clinical trial as the site lactation consultant and in the NUTRILEARN project in Uganda as a nutritionist and subject matter expert. When she is not supporting mothers with breastfeeding challenges, she loves to read, garden and spend time with her family and friends.

Bronwyn Balcomb, RD (SA), IBCLC Bronwyn is a Registered Dietitian who qualified from The University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2005. She then worked at Emmaus Hospital, the then King Edward VIII Hospital and St Mary's Hospital in Mariann hill. Whilst doing Hospital Dietetics Bronwyn developed a love for breastfeeding and assisting mothers and babies. She studied further to become an IBCLC; wrote the IBCLC exam and qualified in 2013. Bronwyn is married with three children (she breastfed them all for a combined total of about 11 years!) and lives in Hillcrest, KZN. She enjoys doing home visits with new families and supporting them in their breastfeeding journeys. She also runs a breast pump demo centre in Hillcrest.

Heather Jepson, Professional Nurse, RM, CHN & RPN, B.Cur (Ed et Adm), SACLC Heather is a professional nurse, working in Infant immunisation clinics since 1992. She has a special passion for breastfeeding after her journey of breastfeeding her two sons. She left baby clinic work to teach at a nursing college but soon learnt that her passion was for helping and teaching mothers. Heather currently works in a baby clinic attached to a maternity ward where she is able to guide mothers on breastfeeding basics. Heather has done presentations for SACLC for the student Lactation Consultants.

Emma Numanoglu, RN, RM, BA (communication science & psychology), BSc (Hons) psychology, SACLC, IBCLC Emma is a Registered Nurse, midwife, and also holds a BA in (communication science and psychology), a BSc (Hons) psychology, and she is a SACLC, and IBCLC. Emma is passionate about her work and feels incredibly honored to be able to do this every day. She has a special interest in supporting Mums who are struggling. Emma runs a breastfeeding clinic from her home, antenatal courses on the weekend, online breastfeeding courses at thebreastplace, does postnatal and prenatal home visits, hospital visits and is very involved in mentoring new students.

Catherine (Katie) Pereira-Kotze, RD (SA), M Nutrition, PhD Public Health Katie is a dietitian by training with a Masters in Nutrition and PhD in Public Health. Katie has worked in the field of public health nutrition since 2005, in government, research, and academia, and has an interest in advocating for the protection, promotion, and support of optimal maternal, infant, and young child nutrition. Katie is from South Africa but relocated to the UK in 2020, and since 2022, has been working as a part-time Senior Nutritionist at First Steps Nutrition Trust, where much of her work is fulfilling the Secretariat for the Baby Feeding Law Group UK. Katie also does part-time research consultancies, including with Alive and Thrive East-Asia Pacific and the South African Medical Research Council. Katie’s current work focuses on advocacy and research for policy and its implementation, especially relating to restricting inappropriate marketing by the commercial milk formula industry and advancing maternity protection.
